Sport and film are two phenomena that more or less simultaneously have gained global popularity during the decades around the turn of the 20th century. Insofar as it concerns the German film industry, however, hardly a film has been made that captured sport's essence. A mixture of feature and Kulturfilm, the examples mentioned ("Das Wunder des Schneeschuhs", [1925], "Wege zu Kraft und Schönheit" [1925]) are neither. Films about sports are made for a small niche market, even though they are eminently appropriate for educational purposes (their slow motion scenes in particular). Nonetheless, author maintains that sports events would be fit for feature fiction films, although they are hard to master. To get to the essence of sport, this is the type of film that allows empathy and a sense of being there.
